ABC LIMELIGHT Magazine, CD REVIEW 2008
'Elizabeth Geyer's third album re-boots the momentum driven by 'The
Dream' where the aesthetic is blurred between an original contemporary
jazz edge and a pianist-singer-songwriter sensibility. Her yearning
tone adapts to a range of emotions and desires in her lyric.
While much of Geyer's thought provoking poetry is open for personal
interpretation, these compositions and arrangements, especially
the energetic pieces include qualities of climactic drama and surprise.
I didn't want the crescendo of 'A Candle Is Sweeter Than Fire' to
end.
Most of her trumpet/flugelhorn acts as improvised gilding but complements
the dynamic between Bill Risby's and Jonathan Zwartz's bass.
SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 2008
'There are two sides to Elizabeth Geyer, who writes, sings and plays
trumpet, flugelhorn and piano. She is an aspiring adult pop artist
with jazz inflections and a jazz artist with pop leanings ... both
work here thanks to a lovely voice and some fine playing by her
and a band of excellent jazz musicians'
Review, Rock For Learning
, Melanie Symes'
ELIZABETH Geyer from Sydney Australia - visiting USA here at the
Karma Coffee House in Hollywood and all it takes is two brilliant
songs as she sings and plays trumpet and piano all at once. Her
sound affects the brain like a cup of chamomile tea and honey and
a hearty piece of chocolate cake causing endorphins of peace and
love. She is Nora Jones & Chris Botti all at once with dynamic
vocals like the dawn and midday! Please have a listen at http://www.myspace.com/elizabethgeyer

DRUM MEDIA CD REVIEW
by Jasmine Crittenden
Artist: Elizabeth Geyer
Title: The Dream
Label: MRA
Elizabeth Geyer has been accomplished for years as a jazz trumpeter
/ flugel-horn player, pianist and vocalist, and has worked with
the likes of Don Burrows and James Morrison. Her debut, self-titled
album featured her unique take on the standard repertoire. More
recently, however, Elizabeth has poured all of her musical energy
and passion into song writing, which has led to the creation of
The Dream.
The decision to change direction has certainly paid off. The Dream
is a musical and engaging album, characterised by its lyricism and
emotional integrity. It is comprised of ten jazz inspired original
songs, composed by both Elizabeth and her collaborator, producer
Tony King. Throughout, there is a strong feeling that, by embracing
the singer / songwriter thing, Elizabeth has really come into her
own. From the opening tune, the gentle Until I’ve Show You
Paris, she commands the listener with her poignant, yearning vocal
style and tender piano playing. The arrangements are creative and
texturally rich, with trumpet and flugel horn melodies and percussion
sounds (courtesy of King, and, on three tracks, drummer Hamish Stuart)
weaving in and out of the vocals. Furthermore, there are some thoughtful,
probing ideas and beautiful imagery contained in the lyrics. Same
World, Different Eyes, for example, deals with the corruption of
childhood naivety by the adult sense of futility and the love songs,
like The Dream, avoid obvious clichés, exploring instead
the complexities and contradictions involved in romantic affairs.
This is a musically interesting and honest album, an impressive
debut from a most promising singer/songwriter.

"Don Burrows has described Elizabeth Geyer's debut
CD as possibly the finest Australian jazz recording made in
the last ten years.
Recorded by Jason Lea and John Morrison at Paradise Studios
and Morrison Studios, Crows Nest, the CD immediately catches
the ear for sheer originality of sound and clean execution
of popular standards.

Elizabeth excels on trumpet, flugelhorn, piano and she has
delightful vocals. Her accompanying musicians are first rate - Kevin
Hunt on piano, Gary Holgate and Natalie Morrison on bass, John Morrison
and Nicholas McBride on drums, Glen Henrich on vibes and on the
final track Elizabeth is backed by the Swing City big band.
The highlights to my mind were On Green Dolphin Street, Lets
face the Music and Dance, Lover Man and the exciting finale with
Swing City on Come Rain or Come Shine.
The CD is available from major record stores.'

All that Jazz with Noel Crow
North Shore Times |
Occasionally you hear something with that indefinable quality
that makes for 'real' jazz. It swings, there's beautiful playing,
it has warmth and most of all, it makes you feel good.
Liz does all this and more - it's nice to have another great jazz
CD in my collection!'

Finding her Niche

excerpt from "FINDING HER
NICHE" by Ruth Hart, Hawkesbury
When Elizabeth Geyer was 13 her music teacher put her on
trumpet to make up numbers.
As it turned out, the placement was inspired.
"It wasn't my favourite instrument but I found it a
challenge so I stuck at it", she said. Fast forward to
2005 and the jazz performer has transformed into a vocalist
and made the wonderfully mellow flugel horn her own.
Audiences will delight in well-known standards as well as
original material from her 2005 release 'The Dream'.
The melodies are infectious and the lyrics are intelligent. In
the track 'Same World Different Eyes', Elizabeth gets inside
the
mind of four passengers on a bus and presents their different
views of
the same scene. The result is poetic and thought provoking.
Another track, 'My Song Of Spring', rings with longing for
the past. "Everything is fleeting" , Elizabeth said.
"The past is part of who we are today and carries a strange
sadness sometimes for me."
But the past also holds many happy memories including what
Elizabeth describes as her most memorable gig.
"It was in 2001 and I turned up with my trumpet to play
as part of the band in the Legends Of Jazz concert to a 50,000
strong crowd," she said.
"We found out at the last minute that the advertised
vocalist, Kerrie Biddell, wasn't able to attend, so all of
a sudden I was it. It was a terrifying but an amazing experience!"
To add to the terror factor Elizabeth was a student of Biddell,
"but Kerrie and all my other musical heroes have taught
me to be brave, not to follow the pack but to follow your
heart." |

'The Elizabeth Geyer Quartet performed tracks from their new
CD "Elizabeth Geyer"....... she's one dynamic lady alternating
between vocals and playing the Flugelhorn. Her version of My Favourite
Things certainly gives a fresh and different interpretation of this
classic song.'
